Anne Varick

Born in New York City in 1940, Anne Varick (Lauder) is a classically trained sculptor, painter and draughtsman.

In 1977 Anne had her first west coast exhibition at the Quenzler Art Studio in La Jolla, CA, featuring large and small-scale sculpture in cast bronze, marble and pewter. In his review of the exhibition, Richard Reilly, art critic for The San Diego Union, wrote:

“Varick’s figures combine naturalism with a certain degree of primitivism and remind one of Henry Moore’s characteristic human forms . . . some artists register only deformities, Varick registers beauty . . . one hopes it will be the beginning of a distinguished career.” —The San Diego Union, February 20, 1977

Now in her 85th year, Anne works exclusively in digital, a medium she refined during the pandemic, utilizing programs such as Photoshop, Procreate and Topaz Labs. She often uses one of her previous works as a starting point — be it a pen and ink sketch, pastel drawing or photograph — and with her digital tools, takes the relatively simple forms to new heights. She draws daily and delights in challenging herself and pushing boundaries.

There is considerable variety in Anne’s work — no two images are the same — and yet her sculpting background and signature style remain in evidence throughout. Abstracted motifs and geometric forms often deriving from nature — orbs, birds, butterflies, fish, shells, or waves — are in constant metamorphosis, being and becoming, moving through a process of transformation, a reminder of the constantly of change.

A resident of Rancho Santa Fe, CA, Anne is a member of the San Diego Museum of Art Artists Guild (SDMAAG), the Los Angeles Art Association (LAAA) and the Disegno Group at the J. Paul Getty Museum. Her work is in private collections in Rancho Santa Fe, Palm Springs and Los Angeles.
